Officials say most of the ammonia exposure is blowing toward the nearby mountainside and away from densely populated areas, though residents within the designated radius are being urged to remain indoors, seal windows and doors, and shut off ventilation systems.

Authorities have confirmed that plant operations were halted as a precaution. No injuries have been reported at this time, but hazardous materials teams are on-site conducting air quality assessments and working to contain the leak. A siren and emergency text alert system were activated to notify nearby residents.

The Chemours Belle site, which has a long industrial history dating back to DuPont’s ownership, has been the subject of environmental safety concerns in the past. Today’s leak is raising new questions about safety protocols and response readiness at the facility.

Officials have assured the public that the situation is under control but emphasized that the shelter-in-place will remain in effect until further notice. Local schools and businesses in the immediate area have closed for the day as a precaution.
